I was feeling pretty settled in the new place, most of the boxes were unpacked, and it was starting to feel more like home. It felt good.
Then I recently went back to the old place to get the rest of my odds and ends, which resulted in more assorted junk than I expected, and now it lies in disarray all over my studio, leaving very minimal space for me to even walk around in. This round of unpacking and purging is proving to be the most challenging for some reason. Perhaps it's because these are things that have been around for a long time that I have some unknown attachment to.
I'm embarassed to even share this photo, but perhaps it will motivate me to get this done faster. Of course, I'm even more embarassed to have people over because it's in such disarray. It's hard enough to have people here as it is, because the place is so small, too. See how little space I have to walk around in? It frustrates me to the point of inaction at times.
Ah, and the kitchen...
Ugh. Those who know me well know my neatnik tendencies, and this is all a huge deal to me.
I actually like the idea of purging all the extraneous stuff that I'm holding onto "just because I might need it". I just can't afford the space to keep that stuff around anymore, even though they are perfectly good things to have and good hobbies to pursue. I just have to set my priorities for right now. The things I have attachments to, I just need to be able to let go of them, and not associate those things so much with the memories, but let my memories hold themselves.
I am looking forward to living more minimally. It's a process, but the rewards will be great.
The final papers aren't yet signed, but this is where my new home is, starting next month...
I love love love the location! My commute will be easier, whether it's driving or public trans. It's a small studio, but in really great shape, the building is well maintained. Now to browse Apartment Therapy's Smallest Coolest Space contest for inspiration on how to optimize the space...
Needless to say, I'm purging a lot of my old extraneous belongings and simplifying how I live. Definitely a good thing.
